Hire Respiratory Therapists

Some people suffer from breathing problems that pose a threat to their daily life. Breathing problems may result from a variety of health conditions such as: asthma, pneumonia, emphysema, trauma, or any condition involving the lungs.  Respiratory therapists are healthcare professionals who help people who are experiencing such difficulties. From premature babies to the elderly, any breathing problem should be attended to and treated as soon as possible to prevent any life-threatening emergencies.

Hiring respiratory therapists starts with identifying the needs of the hiring facility to create an accurate job description. Crafting a job description is your first chance to invite candidates to take an interest, apply, and join your organization as a respiratory therapist. Be sure to include the responsibilities, requirements, and some interesting information about the hiring organization. The goal of a job description is to enable candidates to gauge if they are a good fit, and to apply!

At the end of the job description, a clear call to action is crucial. Let the candidates know how to apply, what documents to prepare, and where to send them. Finally, post the job announcement on hiring websites, the hiring facility’s social media platforms, and relevant healthcare groups and communities.

Responsibilities of a Respiratory Therapist

The responsibilities of a respiratory therapist involve medical direction and supervision, and they are always part of a larger medical team. They participate in developing and implementing treatment plans for patients, health promotion activities, disease management, and patient education.

Respiratory therapists examine patients and perform chest exams. They also analyze other parameters: blood specimens to determine oxygen and arterial blood gas levels, lung capacity, vital signs, x-rays, and sputum specimens. Depending on the needs of the patients, respiratory therapists work with the medical team to implement a treatment plan. Respiratory therapists are experts in using various machines and devices, ventilators, artificial airway devices, aerosol generators, and therapeutic gas administration apparatus for respiratory care. Similarly, they are in charge of inspecting, testing, and maintaining all respiratory therapy equipment and ensure that they are all functioning optimally and safely.

They monitor the patient’s response to respiratory therapy by assessment and examination and communicate the patient’s progress to the other health team members. Additionally, respiratory therapists conduct rehabilitation activities, educating patients about respiratory health like smoking cessation.

Skills and Qualifications of a Respiratory Therapist

To qualify as a respiratory therapist, candidates must have an associate’s or bachelor’s degree in respiratory therapy. The candidate must also hold a valid state license to practice as a respiratory therapist. Additionally, other requirements are BLS and CPR certification and in-depth knowledge of the pulmonary function and respiratory equipment.

The ideal candidate for a respiratory therapist position is a compassionate critical thinker who can remain calm and objective especially in trauma or emergencies. Excellent communication and organization skills are also important.

Respiratory therapists play a vital role in the healthcare team. Their work involves assessment and critical thinking that enables them to provide safe and effective care.
